Foods That Cause Dental Caries (Cariogenic)

Understanding Kariogenic Foods

Cariogenic food is a food that contains carbohydrates that have been fermented. Fermented carbohydrates can increase the acidity (lowering pH) in the oral cavity and lead to dental caries.

Cariogenic food is a food that contains lots of carbohydrates, with a sticky consistency. So it is easy to stick to teeth and difficult to clean without a toothbrush.

Cariogenic feeding frequency

Cariogenic feeding frequency can cause dental caries. The consumption of cariogenic food that is carried out 20 minutes before and after meals can increase the proliferation of bacteria in the oral cavity and make the acidity of the oral cavity rise or the pH in the mouth decreases. Food can cause dental caries depending on factors: frequency, interval or length of time when eating, the amount, concentration and form of food.

Cariogenic food types

Foods that cause dental caries are carbohydrate foods in the form of polysaccharides, sucrose, disaccharides, and monosaccharides. Foods that contain simple carbohydrates are very easy to cause caries in the oral cavity, for example ice cream, cotton candy, candy and chocolate which contain lots of sugar.

There are two types of cariogenic foods, namely solid and liquid. Cariogenic foods in solid form such as biscuits and candy will be easier to stick to teeth. Types of cariogenic liquid such as ice cream and syrup do not adhere to the surface of the teeth so they are easier to clean than solid foods.

Relationship between cariogenic consumption and caries

Cariogenic consumption habits in children should be limited, because this habit is an important risk factor that can affect dental caries. The World Health Organization (WHO) states that limiting cariogenic consumption is a way that must be done to reduce the incidence of dental caries in children. Cariogenic consumption that is done every day for one week is in the high category, if it is done 4-6 times a week it is in the moderate category and 3 times a week is in the low category.
