Preventing Caries: Watch Your Diet Order

The order and combination of food also affects the cariogenic potential of a food. Bananas are a cariogenic food because they contain carbohydrates that are easily digested by bacteria and have a high ability to stick to teeth, causing caries. However, if bananas are consumed with cereal and milk, they have a low potential to cause caries because milk is in the form of liquid food which can reduce the adhesion ability of fruits. Crackers consumed together with cheese have a lower risk of causing caries when compared to consuming them without cheese. The neutralizing ability of cheese and milk makes these foods recommended to be consumed together with carbohydrate foods that are easily digested by bacteria to reduce the potential causes of caries in food.

Frequent consumption of caries-causing foods will cause an increase in acid production in the mouth. Every time you eat carbohydrate foods that are easily digested by bacteria, it will cause a drop in the pH of the saliva which starts 5-15 minutes after consuming these foods. Snacks that are consumed in small amounts but often have a higher potential to cause caries compared to three meals and a few snacks. In addition, eating a snack containing carbohydrates 20 minutes before or after the main meal has the opportunity to cause bacteria to multiply and produce acid in the oral cavity.
