Foods that Cause Cavities (Cariogenic)

Understanding Cariogenic Foods

Cariogenic foods are those containing carbohydrates that have undergone fermentation. Fermented carbohydrates can lead to a decrease in acidity (pH) in the oral cavity, ultimately resulting in the development of tooth decay.

Cariogenic foods typically have a high carbohydrate content and a sticky consistency, making them easily adhere to the teeth and challenging to clean without using a toothbrush.

Frequency of Consuming Cariogenic Foods

The frequency of consuming cariogenic foods can lead to tooth decay. Consuming cariogenic foods 20 minutes before and after meals can increase the proliferation of bacteria in the oral cavity, causing an increase in acidity or a decrease in pH in the mouth. The risk of food causing tooth decay is influenced by factors such as frequency, interval or duration of eating, quantity consumed, concentration of cariogenic substances, and the form of the food.

Types of Cariogenic Foods

Foods that can cause tooth decay involve carbohydrates in the form of polysaccharides, sucrose, disaccharides, and monosaccharides. Foods containing simple carbohydrates, such as ice cream, cotton candy, candies, and chocolates high in sugar, can easily cause cavities in the oral cavity.

Cariogenic foods can be in solid or liquid form. Solid cariogenic foods, like biscuits and candies, tend to adhere more to the teeth. Liquid cariogenic foods, such as ice cream and syrup, are less likely to stick to the tooth surface, making them easier to clean than solid foods.

Relationship Between Cariogenic Consumption and Cavities

The habit of consuming cariogenic foods in children should be limited as it is a significant risk factor for tooth decay. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), limiting the consumption of cariogenic foods is a crucial step in reducing the incidence of childhood tooth decay. Cariogenic consumption every day for a week falls into the high category, 4-6 times a week is considered moderate, and 3 times a week is categorized as low.
