Kinds of Braces and Tips For Choosing Them

Who doesn't know braces? Braces or known as behel in Indonesia are one of the fixed orthodontic treatments that are performed by attaching brackets for straightening the teeth and restoring the relation between the maxillary and mandibular teeth to their normal position. In Indonesia, braces have become a trend among teenagers to young adults, and they are still in demand today because they are considered to be able to make their appearance look more attractive, even just to increase their prestige in social circles. But do you know? It turns out that there are several types of braces that distinguish them from one another. Come on, see the discussion in this article.

Braces have several types that distinguish one from another in terms of appearance, way of working, and also the cost. What are the types of braces?

  1. Conventional Braces

  • Metal Braces

The conventional type of braces is the type of braces that is most widely used today. Conventional braces consist of stainless steel in the form of brackets that are attached to the front surface of each tooth using special orthodontic dental cement connected by special orthodontic wires and elastic bands. Conventional metal braces are widely chosen by people because of their affordable price.

  • Ceramic Braces

In addition to braces made of metal, there are also conventional braces made of ceramic. Ceramic braces were chosen for more aesthetic reasons because they are the color of the teeth. Although they are made of different materials, ceramic braces are as effective as metal braces. Unfortunately, for some cases, ceramic braces are not recommended because they tend to break. The price of ceramic braces is certainly more expensive than metal braces because they are more aesthetic. In Indonesia itself, using ceramic braces is considered to be able to raise a person's image because ceramic braces have become a trend among Indonesian celebrities.

  • Sapphire Braces

If aesthetics is the main reason many people choose Ceramic Braces, but after reading this article you are again confused about what type of braces is right for you due to the limited strength of Ceramic Braces, then Sapphire Braces are the most appropriate choice. In terms of appearance, this type of braces is clearer and almost resembles the color of real teeth, therefore this type of braces is also often called Ice Bracket. The material of these braces is sapphire, just like sapphire, the strength is the same. However, this does not mean that these brackets are made of real sapphire gemstones, these braces are made with the same chemical composition as sapphire (synthetic) so that they are able to adhere very well to the tooth surface and are not easily broken. Although it sounds new, it turns out that Sapphire Braces have been used for more than 40 years in dentistry. Of course, with a very good aesthetic appearance and a name that is not too well known to people, this will increase your prestige in your social interactions.

  1. Self-Ligating Braces

This type of braces uses metal braces but without elastic rubber, the appearance of the braces is even more shiny than conventional metal braces. These Self-Ligating Braces are equipped with locking clips that can maintain the position of the wire so there is no need to use elastic rubber. In addition, the advantage of it is that the patient does not need to do frequent controls like conventional braces which must be checked every month. The most famous brand of self-ligating braces is Damon, so sometimes people refer to self-ligating braces as Damon braces which are known to have many advantages in terms of locking clip bracket technology, more practical, more aesthetic, stronger and more effective.

  1. Lingual Braces

Basically the metal braces in conventional and lingual braces are the same, the difference is the location of the braces that are installed on the back surface of each tooth. This is so that the braces are not visible from the front, so that they do not interfere with one's appearance. However, these braces are less desirable because they often cause problems in the phonation function (speech) where the tongue movement will be disturbed due to contact with the braces that are installed behind the teeth. In addition, another problem that is often reported is the friction of the braces and the tongue which causes disruption of tongue hygiene and pain in the tongue.

Apart from braces, a fairly popular orthodontic treatment is clear aligner. Clear aligners are thin transparent removable orthodontic appliances that cover the surfaces of teeth. Clear aligners need to be in place for 20-22 hours daily, can be removed while eating or drinking and when brushing teeth. This makes it easier for clear aligner users to keep their teeth clean. Clear aligners have many aesthetic advantages over braces, but they can only be used in cases of mild crowding. The most famous Clear Aligner brand is Invisalign, in fact, most people often mention Invisalign compared to Clear Aligner because of the popularity of this brand. Patients need to change the tray clear aligner at least every 2 weeks and check with the dentist every 4-6 weeks.
